13 Ukrainian books to be translated into English this year as part of the Translate Ukraine Program

The Ukrainian Book Institute announced a list of books whose translations will be supported by the Translate Ukraine Program. Among the program’s 90 translations, the following 13 will be published in English:

 

Modern Ukrainian writers:

  • Yuri Andrukhovych: Collection of Poetry. York Review Books (USA).
  • Kateryna Zarembo: “The Rise of the Ukrainian Sun: History of Donetsk and Luhansk at the Beginning of the 21st Century.” Academic Studies Press (USA).
  • Leonid Finberg: “About Various Things and a Bit about Myself.” Ibidem Press (Germany).
  • Joseph Zissels: “Judge My Thoughts.” Ibidem Press (Germany).
  • “Jewish addresses.” Ibidem Press (Germany).

Ukrainian Classics:

  • Ivan Franko: “Stories. Volume II.” Glagoslav Publications (The Netherlands).
  • Geo Shkurupii: “Jeanne the Battalioner.” Sova Books (Australia).
  • Oleksa Storozhenko: “Marko the Cursed.” Sova Books (Australia).

 

Modern Ukrainian writers serving in the Ukrainian Armed Forces:

 

Children’s literature:

 

This year, priority is given to classical and contemporary Ukrainian literature with a particular emphasis on literature addressing Russia’s war against Ukraine. Ukrainian books will be translated into 25 languages to reach a wider global readership.

 

Serhiy Zhadan and Taras Prokhasko are this year’s most popular writers in terms of the number of titles up for translation, followed by Volodymyr Vakulenko-K (with a Diary of Occupation), Pavlo Kazarin (The Wild West of Eastern Europe), Andriy Liubka and Yevhenia Kononenko (various books).

 

The full list of supported projects is available here. Over the past three years (2020–2023), the program has supported the translation of 176 books by Ukrainian authors.
