Poland ranked sixth among EU countries in the number of new titles published
19.11.2024In 2023, the net profit of EU publishers rose by 1.6% compared to the previous year, according to the Federation of European Publishers’ (FEP) report on the European book market. This profit amounted to €24.4 billion, surpassing the peak reached in 2007.
This growth may be partly linked to an increase in book prices. However, book prices rose less than inflation, increasing by 4.1% compared to the 6.4% inflation rate.
Iceland showed the highest growth for the year at 7.4%. Germany, the UK, and France were the top sellers of books in 2023, while the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, and France published the most new titles. Poland moved into sixth place this year, marking its entry into the list of analyzed countries. Forecasts for 2024 remain uncertain due to varied first-half statistics, yet familiar patterns have emerged, including rising costs and prices alongside declining publication volumes. Despite a notable discrepancy between nominal and real market turnover, the post-pandemic growth trend is expected to continue.
The FEP presented this research on October 16, during the opening of the Frankfurt Book Fair. The analysis included data from 600 European publishers, covering trends without representing every individual publisher.
