Ukraine raises funds to restore school libraries damaged by Russia
17.02.2023The savED Charitable Foundation and the Ukrainian children’s book space BaraBooka have started raising UAH 600,000 (USD 16,250) to restore school libraries damaged during the full-scale war.
The funds raised will be used to buy sets of the best children’s and teenage books by Ukrainian authors who have been included in the annual Barabooka’s Top rating for different years.
“As a result of the full-scale war, hundreds of school libraries were damaged, destroyed and looted. Today, we can not only restore them, but also immediately fill them with the best books by Ukrainian authors to replace the old Russian and Soviet ones that, unfortunately, have been in school libraries for decades. We are convinced that every school library should have a high-quality, modern Ukrainian book,” says Anna Novosad, co-founder of the savED charity foundation.
The sets of books purchased with the funds raised will be handed over to 10 schools in Kyiv and Chernihiv regions whose libraries were damaged during the full-scale war.
This is currently a pilot project to raise funds for books for school libraries. It is known that the savED charitable foundation plans to continue to hold similar fundraisers and fill school libraries with the best Ukrainian literature.

savED is an international charitable foundation established in 2022 to help restore children’s access to education in the aftermath of war. The Foundation does this by rebuilding infrastructure, arranging shelters, creating school development strategies, developing programs and providing educational activities for children. The Foundation was founded by former Minister of Education and Science Anna Novosad together with the GoGlobal educational foundation.
The Ukrainian Children’s Book Space BaraBooka is a project to support children’s reading that has been operating since 2014. Every year, the project determines BaraBooka’s Top, a list of the best children’s and teenage books.
As of February 3, Russia has damaged and destroyed 479 Ukrainian libraries.
