Gaza municipality accuses Israel of deliberately destroying library

Municipal authorities of Gaza accused Israel of deliberately destroying the Diana Tamari Sabbagh Library, according to a tweet by the Gaza municipality.

“The attacks on various cultural centers are aimed at spreading ignorance in the society,” Gaza municipality stated in a post.

Gaza municipal authorities called on UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, to protect cultural sites:

“The Gaza city council called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, to intervene and protect cultural centers, and also condemn the occupation attacks on sites protected by international humanitarian law.”

As previously reported, the finalists of the American National Book Awards 2023 made a joint statement calling for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Palestine. American writer Anne Boyer resigned her position as poetry editor of The New York Times in support of Palestine and condemnation of Israel’s war against the people of Gaza. She wrote her statement in a letter.

The conflict began following an attack by Hamas on October 7 into southern Israel, resulting in over 1,200 deaths, predominantly among civilians, and the capture of 240 hostages, including infants, children, women, soldiers, elderly individuals, and Thai agricultural workers, according to the Associated Press. Israel retaliated with an extensive aerial bombardment throughout Gaza and a ground offensive in the north. The Health Ministry in the Hamas-governed Gaza reports that over 13,300 Palestinians have been killed, with approximately two-thirds being women and children.
