Translating Ukraine Summer Institute
Call for Applications: Translating Ukraine Summer Institute Wroclaw, Poland
27.02.2024Translating Ukraine Summer Institute in Wroclaw was organized by the University of Alberta, Harvard University, Columbia University, Cambridge University, Kolegium Europy Wschodniej, and New Eastern Europe to address the shortage of translators in the academic and cultural Ukrainian sectors. The summer institute will be held in Wroclaw, Poland from June 3 to June 15, 2024.
“The demand remains very high for all things Ukrainian and our inability to respond to it with strong content in high-quality English translation has severely limited Ukraine’s efforts at cultural diplomacy. Together with our fantastic partners, we decided to make the first step toward changing that. The pie in the sky remains the idea of a degree program in translation from Ukrainian—but that is so far off, and we didn’t want to wait,” wrote Oleh Kotsyuba, Director of Publications at the Ukrainian Research Institute, Harvard University, on his Twitter page.
The initiative, supported by academic partners in Canada, US, UK, and Poland, will provide intensive twelve-day training for emerging and mid-career translators in literary and academic translation. Led by the invited faculty and experienced professionals, the program focuses on building key skills in Ukrainian-English translation, fostering a global network of translators, and offering three training modules: literary prose, poetry, and non-fiction/academic texts. Participants will have the opportunity to work on individual projects, present their work, and build mentoring relationships.
Translating Ukraine Summer Institute will admit 20 participants through a two-stage application process. For Stage 1, candidates must submit their application by March 1, 2024, including a CV, statement of interest, and the names of two referees. Successful applicants will proceed to Stage 2, where they will present samples of their translations along with respective source texts.
You may submit your application through this link.
