Marjana Savka made laureate of Woman of Ukraine Award

Marjana Savka, Ukrainian poet, writer, musician, and editor-in-chief and co-founder of the Lviv-based Old Lion Publishing House, has won the 2025 Woman of Ukraine Award. She received the prize in the “Culture” category at the award ceremony held May 28 in Kyiv.

 

Among other nominees were:

 

  • Susanna Karpenko, singer, composer, co-leader of the folk group Bozhychi, and chief choirmaster of the Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theater;
  • Zhanna Kadyrova, artist and sculptor working in the tradition of site-specific art, creating objects, installations, mosaics, and sculptures;
  • Tetyana Pylypchuk, head of the Kharkiv Literary Museum;
  • Olena Honcharuk, cultural manager who has worked for over seven years at the Dovzhenko Center, including as the director of the Cinema Museum;
  • Olha Brehman, producer with more than 15 years of experience in film production; and
  • Oleksandra Sayenko, cultural manager, civic activist, and cultural diplomat.

Savka has written  over 20 books and 50 songs and leads the band “Trio Marjanychi.” She composed the musical “Write Letters to Saint Mykola”; has been the program director of numerous festivals; is a member of PEN Ukraine; and was shortlisted for the Shevchenko National Prize.

 

The Woman of Ukraine National Award was founded in 2016 to honor and support women who are making a difference in Ukraine and the world. The award is introduced in 15 categories, including defense, business, innovation, medicine, science, culture, and charity spheres. Over 100 experts from different areas help choose the nominees.
