A collection by translator Oksana Maksymchuk to be published in the USA and the UK

The debut poetry collection “Still City” by Ukrainian translator Oksana Maksymchuk will be published in the United States and the United Kingdom. 

“Still City” will be published in the UK by Carcanet Press in May and in the US by American Pitt Poetry Series in November.

Maksymchuk describes the poems in the collection as reflections on hope and what poetry can offer in dark times.

“The poems contemplate the fluctuating sense of reality, temporality, mortality, and intimacy in the face of a catastrophic event. Straddling the line between chronicle, chorus, and collage, “Still City” reflects the experience of liminality with urgency and intensity, offering different perspectives on war and its aftermath,” the publisher’s description reads.

The book includes poems inspired by social media posts, news, eyewitness accounts, recorded oral histories, photographs, drone footage, intercepted messages, official documents, and songs.

“At times ecstatic, at times cathartic, these poems shed light on survival, grief, and hope through moments of horror and awe,” was also included in the publisher’s description.

Oksana Maksymchuk is a bilingual Ukrainian American poet, scholar, and literary translator. Her translations have won the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize and awards from the American Association for Ukrainian Studies. Her anthology of contemporary Ukrainian poets “Words for War: New Poems from Ukraine,” which Maksymchuk co-edited with her husband Max Rosochynsky, received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
