The eighth issue of the Durschlag electronic magazine, created with the help of artificial intelligence, has been released. This was announced by the magazine’s founder Pavlo Salyga on his Facebook page.

“As the editor-in-chief, I chose the most delicious things for you. I am sure that the eighth issue of Durschlag will be a pleasant discovery for you and will help expand your knowledge and interests,” he said.

The publication contains articles on:

  • “The role of naïve art in artificial intelligence images”;
  • “The new life of collage”;
  • “Can artificial intelligence create abstract art?”;
  • “Deconstruction of art”;
  • “What should illustrators do?”.

The texts for the issue were written by chatGTP, and the illustrations were created by OpenArt, Midjourney, and DALL E.

In an exclusive commentary to Chytomo, Pavlo Salyga said that he works in the field of AI, so he gets access to various similar products before they become mainstream. In the course of several experiments, he created two sets of images ready for publication, which became the impetus for the new ezine issue.

“We use the term ‘continued editions’ for ezines. The editorial office has no financial obligations to readers or investors, so it can release them whenever the need arises. And the emergence of breakthrough products in the AI world has indeed become such a reason to release a new issue,” he noted.

The work on the issue lasted 2 days, if not counting the pre-generated images.

“We are currently working on the April issue, where we will try to take the discussion to a new level. Artificial intelligence creates its own works based on the works of others. This raises a moral and legal question: to what extent can a work that copies the style of another artist be considered independent? However, what struck us most was the extent to which people who were not previously involved in art were immersed in creating such works. This reminds of a similar breakthrough that photography once made. People who didn’t study to be artists got an opportunity for powerful creative realization. It is very interesting to explore this, so in the new issue we will talk to several artists working in this direction,” said Salyga.

The full issue is available here.

The art ezine Durschlag is one of the first Ukrainian electronic magazines, founded in 2007. It works with illustrations, collages, photos, and other visual materials. “Our zine is called ‘Durshlag’ (translated as ‘colander’ in English) because we wanted to take a lot of all this art that is available on the Internet, sift through our aesthetic taste and give it to you on a plate,” Pavlo Salyga told Chytomo.

Infinite Odyssey is the world’s first magazine created entirely by artificial intelligence. It was published on February 3, 2023.
