Hot water pipe burst causes severe damage to Smoloskyp and Litosvita offices

The offices of the Smoloskyp publishing house and bookstore, along with the Litosvita office, were damaged after a hot water pipe burst in the building they occupy in Kyiv.

For six hours, boiling water flooded the premises of the historic building. Books stored in the basement were affected, and most of them were destroyed.

Smoloskyp Publishing House was established in exile and later relocated its operations to Ukraine after the country gained independence. In the United States, Smoloskyp published dissident and human rights literature, as well as works by Ukrainian writers who had been persecuted under Stalin’s regime. In Ukraine, the publishing house focuses on debut books by emerging authors, with the goal of fostering and expanding a community of young Ukrainian creatives.

Litosvita is a school of creative and professional writing. It teaches people to master the written word, contributing to the development of a strong culture of writing and text.
