House of Europe launches grant program for translation of Ukrainian books

House of Europe, a European Union grant program, announces grants for EU and UK publishers to translate and publish Ukrainian fiction and non-fiction books.

“This grant is your chance to uncover Ukrainian fiction and non-fiction books to your readers, catering for the evermore-rising interest in countries’ literature,” reads the program website.

EU and UK publishers will receive up to €5,000 for publishing-related tasks including translator’s fees, editing, copyright, design, printing, and marketing.

House of Europe grants will cover up to 70% of publication costs and finance translations of various genres: fiction, nonfiction, drama, poetry, and comic books. Publishers wishing to provide Ukrainian bestsellers to those with visual impairments can publish books in Braille.

The deadline to apply for the grant program is July 10, 2024, 3 pm Kyiv time. Find more information about the application process and necessary qualifications here.

The House of Europe grant program invites recipients to participate in the alumni community and meet publishers who have previously partook in the program. Among them are Wytwórnia Magdalena Kłos-Podsiadło, Ergo, Fraktura, Septime Verlag, Latvijas Mediji, and more than 39 publishers from the EU and Ukraine.

“We intentionally timed the grant competition so that the winners could work on translation and publication until the end of next year. I hope this will encourage them to take on large-scale book projects that take time,” Translation Grants Manager Tetiana Manziuk informed in an exclusive comment to Chytomo.

According to Tetiana Manziuk, the most active applicants for this program were publishers from Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Germany.

“With the new wave of the grant competition, we hope to continue our fruitful cooperation with these countries as well as to pave new routes to those countries where readers are just beginning to discover Ukrainian literature,” noted Manziuk.

House of Europe is an EU-funded program for professional and creative exchange between Ukrainians and their colleagues in EU countries and the UK. The program focuses on different professional fields: culture and creative industries, education and youth work, social entrepreneurship, and media.
