Russia has damaged or destroyed 358 Ukrainian libraries

Due to russian full-scale invasion, 358 Ukrainian libraries got damaged or destroyed. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine (MCIP) on its Telegram channel.

Most of the damaged libraries are located in Donetsk region (31%), Kyiv region (21%), Mykolaiv region (13%), and Kharkiv region (11%).

 

General library fund of Ukraine is 193.4 mln documents. In 2021, 26 235 library workers were addressed by Ukrainians 91.8 mln times. Overall, there are 9.2 mln people registered in libraries.

 

“Despite martial law, libraries remain the centers of our spiritual strength and cultural identity. We are grateful to each and every person preserving our literary heritage,” goes in the MCIP statement.

 

It shall be reminded, that as of August 25 there were 56 Ukrainian libraries damaged or destroyed as a result of russian-Ukrainian war.
