Twitter deleted some 50,000 fake posts about the war in Ukraine
17.03.2022The social network Twitter has deleted or marked as unreliable more than 50,000 posts containing fake information about the war of the russian federation against Ukraine. Twitter’s Vice President of Global Public Policy Sinead McSweeney wrote about this on her blog.
«Like so many around the world, we’re disturbed and deeply saddened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis unfolding there. Our top priority is to promote the safety of people on and off the service, and our teams are working diligently to that end», – said in the statement.
According to McSweeney, fake tweets contained old videos purporting to be shot in Ukraine.
«In line with our synthetic and manipulated media policy, we have labeled or removed more than 50,000 pieces of content», – McSweeney said.
In addition, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Twitter has deleted more than 75,000 accounts containing spam and manipulation.
The social network has also started adding labels to many profiles of state-owned media from Belarus and plans to do the same for state organizations in Ukraine.
«We are labeling qualifying government accounts to provide additional context. This week, we’ll be rolling out government account labels to Ukrainian government accounts», – the company’s Vice-President added.
The company also continues to engage and support humanitarian organizations: through their giving campaign for Twitter employees, they’re routing donations to recognized organizations directly supporting Ukrainian refugees, matching all donations, and making direct contributions to partner organizations.
As reported earlier, the social network Facebook has changed its rules and forbids death wishes to the heads of states, in particular to russian president putin and self-proclaimed Belarusian President Lukashenko.
It will be recalled that Facebook and Instagram, which are owned by Meta Corporation, previously allowed hate speeches towards the russian occupants.
In addition, Russian media regulator Roskomnadzor blocked access to Facebook and Twitter. Russia has also banned Instagram due to «extremist activities».
