Ukrainian writer, artist, and translator Daryna Gladun has been awarded the Billy Maich Academy of American Poets Prize by the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA.

 

“The Billy Maich Prize is awarded to the Notre Dame student, graduate or undergraduate, for excellence in poetry, recognizing for the best group of poems from among those submitted,” reads the University of Notre Dame’s official website.

 

Daryna Gladun is a Ukrainian writer, scholar, literary journalist and translator, and one of the first researchers of the phenomenon of poetic performance in Ukraine. She was recognized for poetry written in English. This work is slated to be published on the website of the Academy of American Poets.

Gladun is the author of several poetry collections, including “To cut the tree” (a collection of eco-poetry that reconsiders national myths), “From the Shadow of Handsome Red Boys” (a collection that discusses topics of soviet heritage and post-totalitarian experience of former soviet republics), “Radio ‘War,’” “The War Will not Start Tomorrow,” and others. In 2020, her book “From the Shadow of Handsome Red Boys” was named one of the best according to PEN Ukraine ratings.

 

Critical articles, reviews, and analyses of Gladun’s work have appeared in the literary magazines Berezil and Kontekst, the newspapers Den and Proskuriv, and Chytomo.

 

The University of Notre Dame is a private Catholic elite university, founded in 1842 by French priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross Edward F. Sorin. Today, it has around 10,000 students and ranks among the top twenty universities in the United States.
