Serhiy Zhadan has received the Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello. The writer shared the news about it on his Facebook page.

“Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello is the prize in the field of human rights. I believe these issues are essential and particularly pressing for Ukraine nowadays – russian occupiers have deprived thousands of our compatriots of their basic rights and freedoms. This war is actually the war for our rights and the right to be ourselves in particular,” said Zhadan.

As the writer mentioned the money he received with the prize, i.e. 10 000 zl, he’s going to invest in the defense of Kharkiv.

The Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello is awarded to acknowledge a significant contribution to the fight for human rights.

The award is named after a Brazilian diplomat Sérgio Vieira de Mello who worked for the UN for over 34 years. He was killed in an explosion at the Un facility in Baghdad on August 19, 2003.

It shall be reminded that Serhiy Zhadan won the Award of Jerzy Giedroyć Poland-Lithuania Cooperation and Dialogue Forum 2022. And earlier this year he also won the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought 2022.
