For the first time in Ukraine, more books are published in English than in Russian

In 2024, 377 titles in English were published in Ukraine with a total circulation of 923,000 copies, as reported by the Book Chamber of Ukraine.

Official data indicates that in 2024, a total of 14,500 books were published in all languages, with a circulation of 34 million copies. The book publishing market has not yet returned to its pre-invasion level. In 2021, 21,095 books were published, with a circulation of 44.8 million copies.

Last year, the majority of books were published in Ukrainian, with 12,597 titles and a total circulation of 31.5 million copies. In comparison, 472 titles were published in Russian, totaling 351,600 copies, and 377 titles were published in English, with a total circulation of 923,000 copies. 

28 books were published in Polish, with a circulation of 75,300 copies, and 17 titles in German, totaling 51,500 copies. Romanian saw 32 books published, with a total circulation of 42,800 copies, while 35 titles were published in Hungarian, with a circulation of 31,100 copies. Only four books were published in French, with a total circulation of 4,600 copies

Seven books were published in Slovak, with a total circulation of 2,100 copies, while six publications were released in the Crimean Tatar language, with a circulation of 2,200 copies. 

In addition to bilingual and monolingual editions, 74 titles were published in Ukrainian and Russian, with a total circulation of 17,200 copies. Publications in various languages of the peoples of Ukraine totaled 85 books, with a circulation of 266,300 copies, while books printed in multiple global languages amounted to 744 publications, with a total circulation of 732,600 copies.

As reported earlier, over 15,000 books were published in Ukraine in 2023, with 12,688 titles in Ukrainian, 700 in Russian, and 446 in English.

In 2022, 12,688 titles were published in Ukrainian, with a circulation of 22,612,800 copies, while 762 titles were published in Russian, totaling 585,600 copies. In English, 213 titles were published, with a circulation of 142,100 copies. In 2021, the circulation of books in Ukrainian also surpassed that of Russian, with 44,753,600 copies in Ukrainian and 39,922,800 copies in Russian.

The largest number of books in Russian was published in 2013 – 7,198 titles with a circulation of 27.7 million copies. After the Revolution of Dignity, the number of titles and copies of Russian-language books began to decline. 

The data from the Book Chamber of Ukraine is compiled based on the number of mandatory copies submitted by publishers during the year.
