The book «I See That» is nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize

Romana Romanyshyn and Andriy Lesiv’s children’s book I See That has been nominated for the prestigious Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (German Children’s Literature Award) 2022. This was reported on the website of the German Association for Children’s and Youth Literature Arbeitskreis Jugendliteratur.

The Deutsche Jugendliteraturpreis has been awarded annually since 1956 by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.

The educational picture book by the Agrafka creative workshop, published by the Old Lion Publishing House, will compete in the non-fiction (Sachbuch) category with five other nominees:

 

  • Dogs in the Future. Grammar in Pictures (Hunde in der Zukunft. Grammatik in Bildern), text by Johannes Reeder and Suzanne Reeder, illustrations by Aridna Kraciun, design by Carsten Hermes.
  • In the Time of the Dodo. About Extinction and Survival of Species (Damals der Dodo. Vom Aussterben und Überleben der Arten), text and illustrations by Izabelle Pin, translated from French by Martin Zwilling.
  • From Moscow to Vladivostok. Journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway (Von Moskau nach Wladiwostok. Eine Reise mit der Transsibirischen Eisenbahn), text by Alexandra Litvinova, illustrations by Anna Desnitskaya, translated from Russian by Lorenz Hoffmann and Thomas Weiler.
  • The Universe, or the Secret of How Nothing Became Something (Das Weltall, oder Das Geheimnis, wie aus nichts etwas wurde), text by Jan Paul Schuten, illustrations by Flor Reeder, translated from the Dutch by Feren Kiefer.
  • The Smell of Pine Trees. My Family and its Secrets (Der Duft der Kiefern. Meine Familie und ihre Geheimnisse), text and illustrations by Bianca Schalburg.

 

The award ceremony will be on October 21, 2022, at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

 

In 2018 the book I See That won first place and the Grand Prix of the Best Book Design competition held at the eighth International Book Arsenal Festival.

 

The book also won the Bologna Ragazzi Award 2018 – the most prestigious international award in children’s literature – in the Non-Fiction category, and was recognized as the best in the nomination World of Childhood of the All-Ukrainian competition «Best Book of Ukraine».

 

In 2019 it was among the winners of the book design competition from Stiftung Buchkunst – The Best Book Design from all over the World 2019.
