The Library of Congress will add Chytomo to its archive
08.08.2022The United States Library of Congress will include Chytomo website in its web archive. This was stated in the letter from the Library of Congress to our editorial.
“We consider your website to be an important part of this collection and the historical record,” goes in the letter.
The Library will make the archives available to researchers at Library facilities and by special arrangement. Public access to it will be opened no earlier than one year after the archiving is completed.
“Chytomo has been operating for 13 years, and in the course of this time it has gathered the colossal amount of important information on Ukrainian publishing business and literature. The website has gone through a long evolutionary path from the student project to one of the most influential media about book industry. It not only covers the current situation in the field but also archives the history of cultural journalism of Ukraine, as in the project “Exemplars XX”. Thus, it is nice to realize that our work has been acknowledged and from now on Chytomo will be the part of one of the most important archives in the world,” said the executive editor and director of the NGO Chytomo Oleksandr Mimruk.
Chytomo is an independent Ukrainian media about reading and book publishing in Ukraine and world. It is a trendsetter of Ukrainian book market that provides high-quality analytics and exclusive materials, experiments and innovations. The web site publishes book news, reviews, book selections, interviews, analyses market trends, covers cultural projects, events and opportunities. It was founded in 2009 by Oksana Hmelyovska and Iryna Baturevych.
The Library of Congress preserves important cultural artifacts and provides enduring access to them. The crucial task of web archives is to store the information that could otherwise be lost. Except their own collections of web archive the Library of Congress also cooperates with other organisations in order to record the events taking place in the US and all around the world. In most cases the access is granted through partner organisations.
In the collection of the Library’s archives there’s already an archive dedicated to russian war in Ukraine (Ukraine Conflict).
It shall be reminded that the initiative Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online gathers the data and archives the web sites of Ukrainian cultural organisations so that they could be restored if needed. And the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine gathers the information regarding the destruction and damage of the objects of cultural heritage committed by russian occupying troops within the territory of Ukraine.
