Top-selling books in the Czech Republic for 2024
29.05.2025
The Association of Czech Booksellers and Publishers released its annual list of top-selling books in the Czech Republic for 2024.
According to the association, Czech readers primarily favored fiction written by local authors. However, two British writers — Robert Bryndza and Julie Caplin — also earned spots on the list.
The list included:
- “Šikmý kostel 3” (“The Leaning Church 3”) by Czech writer Karin Lednická is a chronicle about a lost town in the aftermath of World War II. The book, which covers the years 1945 to 1961, was published by the Bílá vrána publishing house.
“How long does a war last after it ends? Forever, if you’ve survived it. The real question is, how can one fill the emptiness left by murdered loved ones or a kidnapped child? How does one fend off memories of the Germans’ horrific terror or the unwanted physical advances of the Russians? Some will bury it deep in their soul and convince themselves every morning that what happened is in the past, and now they simply have to move on. Another will drown in grief; yet another will turn their trauma into hatred. And someone else will believe that they are the one who will help build a new, better world.”
- “Myšlenky za volantem 2” (“Reflections Behind the Wheel 2”) by Czech writer Marek Eben, published by Brána. This is a collection of the author’s columns and feuilletons that were published in magazines between 2020 and 2024.
- “Objektivní nález” (“Objective Finding”) by Czech writer Tomáš Šebek is a novel based on real events from the author’s life, published by Paseka.
“When you are born into a family with an abuser and an alcoholic, you have two options for how to live your life: you can either ruin it, or you can try to ruin it a little less. It’s time to reveal the truth about who I truly am. And I believe I’m not just sharing my own story.”
The list of most popular books featured two books by English writer Robert Bryndza, both published by Cosmopolis:
- “Záhadná oběť” (“The Lost Victim”) is a detective novel about the mysterious murder of schoolgirl Janey.
- “Anděl smrti” (“Angel of Death”) follows a detective investigating a series of murders targeting well-known individuals.
“When a detective finds a wealthy politician dead in his own bed, the police leadership quickly decides his death doesn’t require investigation. The case is quietly closed until they find the body of a rising football star. Investigators soon connect these deaths to the earlier murder of a prominent film director. It becomes impossible for the police to overlook the truth: a serial killer is on the loose in London.”
- “Hospůdka v Praze” (“A Little Place in Prague”) by Julie Caplin is a romance novel published by Cosmopolis.
“Anna received her dream internship at a brewery in Prague and is eager to learn from true brewing craft professionals. To spend a few months in the heart of Europe, enjoying world-class cuisine and the finest beer — it all seems perfect — until she discovers who the other intern, and her new roommate, is. It is Leonardo, someone from her past she never expected or wanted to see again. Could the charm of Prague rekindle what once was?”
One of the most popular nonfiction books was the reissued edition of “Atomic Habits” by American author James Clear, released by Czech publisher Jan Melvil Publishing.
