In 2022, Ukraine moved up to 35th place in the world in terms of English proficiency out of 111 countries. This is evidenced by the EF EPI international English language proficiency ranking.eng

In 2021, Ukraine was ranked 40th, the lowest figure was recorded in 2019 — 49th out of 100 countries surveyed.

In general, the level of English in Ukraine is classified as moderate. It ranks 27th among 35 European countries.

The best English speakers are:

  • Netherlands;
  • Singapore;
  • Austria;
  • Norway;
  • Denmark;
  • Belgium;
  • Sweden;
  • Finland;
  • Portugal;
  • Germany.

According to analysts at BUKI, the demand for English tutors has grown significantly since the start ofутпeng the large-scale invasion. At the same time, if in previous years tutors for adults and children were sought in a ratio of about 50:50, in 2022 the proportion shifted significantly. Currently, approximately 60% of all requests are for an English teacher for adults.

Most often, Ukrainians need a tutor for the B1-B2 (Intermediate) level. At the same time, more than half of the applicants prefer online learning. Requests for distance learning have become prevalent since the start of the pandemic, and the war has significantly accelerated this process.

In terms of money, despite considerable inflation in Ukraine, the cost of tutoring has not increased significantly. While in 2021, an English lesson cost an average of 189 UAH (5.10 $), in 2022, one lesson with a tutor cost 214 UAH (5.80 $).

Tutoring is most often chosen by women as a job or additional income. Only 12% of English teachers registered on the BUKI service are men.

The geography of requests for English tutors has changed since the beginning of the large-scale aggression against Ukraine. In absolute terms, the leaders remained unchanged: Kyiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv and Lviv. In 2022, the number of applicants grew particularly rapidly in Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil regions, while Kherson, Mykolaiv and Kirovohrad regions are ahead in terms of the percentage of residents per teacher.

These data partially coincide with the results of the EF EPI study: Lviv, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv were recognized as the cities with the best English language skills. The worst English skills are in Simferopol and Rivne. Among the regions, Khmelnytskyi, Lviv, Kyiv, Poltava, and Zaporizhzhia regions are leading, while Crimea and Kherson region showed the lowest results.

According to the EF EPI, Ukrainians aged 20 to 30 are the most proficient in English by age group.
