Voting for the Angelus Central European Literary Award 2023 has opened

Online voting has begun for a prestigious literary award in Poland — and two Ukranian writers are in the running.

The Angelus Central European Literary Award is a literary prize awarded annually since 2006 for the best prose book published in the Polish language in the past year. Stanislav Aseev, author of “The Bright Path: the story of one concentration camp”, translated by Marcin Gaczkowski, KEW, is one of the seven short-listed nominees, along with  Tamara Duda, author of the novel “Daughter”, translated by Marcin Gaczkowski, KEW.

 

Other nominees include:

 

  • Katarína Kucbelová, “The Bonnet”, translated by Katarzyna Dudzic-Grabińska, Ha!art (Slovakia);
  • Zyta Rudzka, “He laughs who has teeth”, WAB Foksal (Poland);
  • Judith Schalansky, “An Inventory of Losses”, translated by Kamil Idzikowski, Ha!art (Germany);
  • Piotr Siemion, “Bella, ciao”, Filtry (Poland);
  • Saša Stanišić, “Where”, translated by Małgorzata Gralińska, Książkowe Klimaty (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Germany).

 

Voting for the 2023 laureate is now underway and will run until October 13, as confirmed by the award’s Facebook page (posted in Polish). The decision rests in the hands of the online audience, who will determine the winner via their votes. The winner will be receive an invitation to a three-month literary residency in the city of Wroclaw and a a cash prize of 150,000 Polish zloty.

 

The award recognizes outstanding prose works by authors who delve into the most pressing and significant issues of contemporary society, prompting readers to reflect and gain a deeper understanding of other cultures.

 

The city of Wroclaw is the founder and organizer of the award. Writers from Central European countries, including Austria, Albania, Belarus, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Germany, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Ukraine, Croatia, Czech Republic, and Montenegro, are eligible for nomination and can potentially become the recipient of the award.

In 2022, the laureate of the Angelus prize was Polish writer Edward Pasewicz for his novel Pulverkopf.
