Republic of Moldova closes Russian cultural center
18.02.2025
The government of the Republic of Moldova closed the Russian cultural center in Chișinău after Russian drones breached the airspace within the country, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova announced.
According to the ministry, on the night of Feb. 13, 2025, parts of the drones fell on the territory of Taraclia district after Russia’s massive attack on Reni, a Ukrainian port city. The ministry urgently summoned the ambassador of Russia in Moldova and showed him the wreckage of the drones as evidence of serious violations of the country’s territorial sovereignty.
“In response to these provocative actions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to unilaterally terminate the intergovernmental Moldovan-Russian agreement on the establishment and functioning of cultural centers, concluded in 1998,” the representative of the ministry said.
The Russian Center for Science and Culture has been functioning in Chișinău since February 2009, promoting Russian culture, science, and education, supporting Russian-speaking communities, and facilitating youth exchanges. As reported, Romanian has become the official language of Moldova.
