The Book Chamber of Ukraine: the number of books published in Ukraine has decreased by 26% this year

Over the last year, the number of books published in Ukraine dropped by 1967 titles and the circulation decreased by 2347 thousand copies. These are the figures presented by the Book Chamber of Ukraine.

As of September 30, 2022 there have been 5544 books and brochures published, while a year ago there were 7511 issues published. The number of books and brochures published in 2022 has dropped by 26% as compared to the figures of 2021.

 

The circulation has decreased by 35%: in 2021 there were 6689 thousand copies, while in 2022 there have been only 4341 thousand copies.

 

As for the language distribution, in 2022 there have been 4569 titles published in Ukrainian, which is 21% less than last year. The circulation of books in Ukrainian also dropped by 31%.

 

On the other hand, there have been 464 titles published in russian this year, which is half the amount of the last year. And the circulation of books in russian has dropped by 59% compared to 2021.

 

The number of books published in other languages is 511, which is 37% less than in 2021. The circulation of such books decreased by 60%.

 

There’s no data on books in the languages of indigenous peoples of Ukraine though.

 

It shall be reminded that according to Ukrainian Book Institute, 74% of Ukrainian publishers cannot completely keep up with their operations under the conditions of martial law.
