Ukrainians Andriana Chunis, Tania Yakunova, Mari Kinovych, Masha Foya and Oleksandr Shatokhin have been longlisted for the prestigious World Illustration Awards 2023. The long list of nominees was published on the website of the British Association of Illustrators.

The visual design of Nino Kharatishvili’s book The Eight Life (for Brilka) (Komora Publishing House) by Mari Kinovych was nominated for the award.

“My work was not interrupted by the full-scale invasion, but it interrupted the release of the book, its printing, and, accordingly, it was published in July or later. In general, I had doubts that it would be published because of the shelling of printing houses (it was printed in Kharkiv, at the Globus book factory, I think). I really liked the book, so it was a pleasure to work with it. The publishing house is always very willing to agree to my ideas, so the whole process happened in a pleasant atmosphere of mutual trust,” the illustrator said in an exclusive comment to Chytomo.

The design of The Eight Life (for Brilka) was previously specially recognized by the jury of the Best Book Design 2022 competition for its correspondence to the form, content and printing.

In addition to Mari Kinovych, the longlist includes:

  • the Yellow Butterfly silent book by Oleksandr Shatokhin (The Old Lion Publishing House) in the Children’s Publishing category;

  • book design for The Ladder by Yevheniya Kuznetsova with artwork by Andriana Chunis (The Old Lion Publishing House) in the Book Covers category;

  • illustration by Masha Foya At Night I Dream Of Mariupol in the Editorial category;

  • illustration by Tania Yakunova Scissors in the Exploration category.

In 2023, the competition did not allow illustrators from Russia and Belarus to participate.
