‘Ukrainian Modernism’ photo album by Dmytro Soloviov to be published in the UK
25.04.2025
The British art publishing house FUEL will publish a photo album, “Ukrainian Modernism” by Ukrainian artist Dmytro Soloviov. The book contains photographs of more than 120 objects in different cities of Ukraine: from the Kyiv Salyut Hotel to the Uzhhorod Airport.
“Ukraine’s modernist buildings are an extraordinary blend of function, avant-garde aesthetics and ingenious design, but despite these qualities, they remain largely unrecognised. This is a result of several factors, including the stigma of belonging to the Soviet era, corruption, neglect, as well as the ongoing threat of destruction from both unscrupulous developers and war. Photographer Dmytro Soloviov has crossed Ukraine documenting them to form the most comprehensive publication available on the subject,” reads the annotation to the book on the publisher’s website.
The introduction was written by architectural critic Owen Hatherley. In addition to buildings, there are photographs of mosaics, reliefs, and other decorative elements. The book also includes three postcards.
“Ukrainian Modernism” will be available for purchase from the end of April. Ten percent of the proceeds will go to the British Red Cross to help Ukraine.
Dmytro Soloviov is a photographer, public activist, guide, and author of a project on modernist architecture.
As reported, in 2023, “My Mom Wants To Go Back Home,” a photo book by Ukrainian photographer Hanna Hrabarska was published in the Netherlands.
